Heavy rains from Hurricane Stan in 2005 triggered a mudslide that buried the village of Panabaj, near Lake Atitlan, entombing hundreds. Rather than trying to excavate the village, which lay under tens of meters of mud, the Guatemalan government declared it a burial site and built temporary housing for survivors on safer terrain nearby. Many families, including some Friendship Bridge borrowers, live in this encampment.
